The Iconic Shoe that Brought our Sidestripe to Life: This is the Old Skool

 

The Old Skool was our first footwear design to showcase the famous Vans Sidestripe—although back then, it was just a simple doodle drawn by founder Paul Van Doren. Since its debut in 1977, this low-top silhouette has established itself as an icon in the skate, music, and fashion scenes. From 90s street skaters and punks to current hip hop and fashion legends, the Old Skool has consistently been the go-to shoe for creatives who do things their own way.

Style 36 was Vans’ first Sidestripe shoe brought to life in 1977. Though the Vans Sidestripe has since become the unmistakable—and instantly recognizable—hallmark of the Vans brand, back then it was just a random doodle drawn by founder Paul Van Doren. It even had a different name: the “jazz stripe.” To honor the style that launched an icon, the Style 36 has been re-released with classic canvas and suede uppers paired with gum-colored sidewalls for a vintage touch.

The Authentic VR3 SF combines our original low top silhouette with the Vans Surf SF build to create an upgraded, comfortable lace-up style. Featuring collapsible heels for versatility and washed uppers made from 50% organic cotton canvas and responsibly sourced leather, the Salt Wash Authentic VR3 SF fuses modern and vintage detailing for a twist on the ultimate heritage style.

This season, some of our most iconic Classics have been rebuilt with purposeful choices about the materials we use. Along with uppers made from suede and organic cotton twill, the Twill Old Skool VR3 utilizes a biobased foam VR3Cush™ footbed for comfort you can feel good about and the new VR3Waffle™ outsole that uses natural rubber while still maintaining the grip and durability that Vans has been known for since ’66.

Our team has set ambitious sustainability goals. Big or small, all of our efforts add up to positive change. To earn the VR3 Checkerboard globe logo, at least 30% of the product must be made up of one or a combination of recycled, renewable, and/or regenerative materials.

• FOOTBED: The new VR3Cush™ footbed is made using at least 25% biobased EVA foam partially derived from plants per the ASTM D6866-16 testing standard.
• OUTSOLE: The VR3Waffle™ outsole is made with a proprietary compound containing at least 25% responsibly sourced natural rubber obtained from sources that follow proven sustainable practices with the intention of reducing impacts on the planet. This new natural rubber compound was developed and engineered to maintain the grip and durability Vans is known for (since 66).

This season we have re-thought, re-engineered and rebuilt every little bit of the UltraRange to make it more sustainable. This includes a molded VR3Cush™ midsole, a lightweight construction, a VR3Waffle™ rubber outsole, and a breathable upper designed to reduce waste in production compared to Vans’ traditional cut and sew uppers. The UltraRange VR3 is the manifestation of an idea: that it is not where we are going, but how we get there. Our team has set ambitious sustainability goals. Big or small, all of our efforts add up to positive change. To earn the VR3 Checkerboard globe logo, at least 30% of the product must be made up of recycled, renewable, and/or regenerative materials. PRODUCT FEATURES: • UPPER MATERIAL: The one piece knit upper is made with 50% organic cotton, 36% recycled PET, and 14% recycled nylon. • FOOTBED: The new VR3Cush™ midsole is made using at least 50% biobased EVA foam partially derived from plant-based sources per the ASTM D6866-16 testing standard. • OUTSOLE: All of the rubber used to make the VR3Waffle™ outsole (60% of the compound) is regeneratively grown natural rubber sourced from farms utilizing agricultural practices that are intended to promote biodiversity, enhance water cycles, improve soil health, and/or sequester carbon. This new rubber compound was developed and engineered to maintain the grip and durability Vans has been known for since ‘66.
